...First, I want to cover this:
*points strongly at Lucas and Ike*
...Okay, now...
Smash Brothers is a DAMN good way to show off the past of Nintendo, but it can also, as it's shown, give new life to old characters. Seeing Super Joe again would have truely pleased me, and I'd know there is chance a new Bionic Commando could happen.
Maybe have a character from a yet to be released game to give them interest as well.
What they did was fill the game full of gimmicks (Stickers, Smash orb, etc) that it complicated the idea of the game far to much. It's not a simple button masher to get lost in, with it's bright colors and friendly style.
It's mutated into a metagaming system that requires you to know far more then just the characters. I think Brawl is going to flop.
For starters, Brawl isn't going to flop. At this point, there is NO chance of that whatsoever. The music alone has ensured that.
Second, most people don't like button mashers. A game where you just have to press a button over and over again without any plot or strategy...well, isn't a game. After all, people losing their minds over repetitive motions like that is where those memes you hate so much came from.
Actually, that's something else: you're sick of seeing the same lines used over and over again in the game board, but when a game with real depth comes out, you don't like that either? Which is it?
Also, as for the characters, something that you have to keep in mind is that, while you can still see older characters revived in these games, they have to have some sort of popularity to get a chance at inclusion as a character (or at least be a favorite of Sakurai's as well as fall within his sphere of influence). Just a few people being interested in it won't bring the character in *points at Mischief Makers*, nor will a bunch of people voting for it if the character belongs to another company *points at Geno & Mallow*. In these cases, you're far more likely to get an Assist Trophy...but there still has to be reason for it.

Pit was a good start, and I'm kinda happy he's in, but there are many they could have pulled from that would have been interesting to see again. Jason from Blaster Master, Mark/Bert from Monster Party, Bub and Bob...Smash Brothers is a DAMN good way to show off the past of Nintendo, but it can also, as it's shown, give new life to old characters.
