Any particular reason for the lack of Sonic challenges overall?

Possibility : most people were under impression of Kayorei doing MMBN challenges... Thus they tried to do the same.

yeah, and most of the people who do Sonic challenges don't come here. Not like I'd be able to join the rest when it comes to most games anyway.

Please refer to the "Rules of the Forum"... I forgot what number the rule was, but I do remember it's title: "State your desires!". Please do refer to this rule next time you start a thread tardises. Especially on the Board Games and General Board.
Sonic doesn't have that big of a fan base to make it "famous" for challenge taking. Not to mention, I remember that the series is like an "old school" Mario game. You can't go back to previously completed stages. I believe this was only fixed in Sonic 2... or was it Sonic and Knuckles? I forgot.
Another possible reason is the platform wherein Sonic games are on. I believe that most of them are on the SEGA Saturn or other SEGA consoles, so basically, it's only the Sonic Advanced series that is noticed (including Sonic Battle).

And I second your though about sonic not having a big enuough fanbase for challenge taking. Beside, these are all about speed. Challenge would mostly be: Complete X level X Act under X time.

not necessarily. There;s a surprising amount of variety considering all the factors that determine gameplay. I can't do speedruns anyway.

The single biggest problem I can think of for Sonic challenge taking is that most of the levels are too linear and Sonic is too limited for the moves he can use. It's very similar to what would happen if someone took challenges in a Mario game on the NES. You can only go right, and attack with jumping or fire flowers.
The biggest reason I feel for why MMBN is so popular for challenge taking, aside from Kayorei using it, is that you can fight just one enemy in so many different ways. Just with standerd chips alone, you can make thousands of different folders and still use them in different ways. Then with Navicust, that only increases the number of things you can do.

From the rules:
Anyway, Shinji-kun and Bardpado pretty much covered the reasons already: Battle Network was used by Kayorei first, and has more room for variation than Sonic tends to have. The same applies to Donkey Kong Country, in a way.
...That really covers the question in its entirety, so...
