There's nothing wrong with Chikorita, infact I think it's just as good as cyndaquil. I only choose fire because QUILAVA 'nuff said. Totodile sucks, then again I have flaafy to counter that (and not ampharos, that's capable of defeating Red's Pikachu at level 50! No joke!).
Also, starter poke'mon should be chosen over personal prefference rather than tactical solutions. After all, you can just go and catch the best poke'mon for the job. The shallow reason is even more important here as from what I can see ALL poke'mon have an overworld sprite. After all, if Luxray, Roserade and Infernape (EpicMiles, Rashi and Glassey. In that order of prefference. The names are friends of mine; Glassey is incompetent) - or two good poke'mon and a trained bad one - can defeat the poke'mon league with support from HM slaves, anything can!

I agree with the statment that "starter poke'mon should be chosen over personal prefference rather than tactical solutions" because that's what I do. I just have a grudge against Chikorita, a *vendetta* if you will.
Anyways, 2 days until the Japanese release (12th of September). I've been debating whether I should buy a Japanese one or not. I can read the basics of Japanese, just not very well...

Ooh, I'd have to choose Totodile and Soul Silver. Lugia is much cooler than the cockerel, and Totodile is SOOOOO CUTE!!! :3

Soul Silver/Totodile.
I downloaded a translated ROM because I couldn't wait. It was very bugged and crashed when I tried to use an item. And to make matters worse, it didn't let me save. ;_;
But anyways, love the new female trainer design. Crystal was awesome too, but Soul also has her own charm.

Fix'd I'll be going with the more traditional method. Gold+cyndaquil. This is the ONLY game where having a fire starter doesn't screw you over before the first gym. You also won't be getting a decent fire type anytime soon either, so it's win/win.

As I said, I'm going to take Chikoriita. Beside, I won't have too much problems, since you can catch a Geodude early on. As of fire pokemons, true, you don't get many fire pokemon until later on, but most fire pokemon sucks anyways, including Typhlosion. Those are like pure Grass: Too many common weaknesses (Ground, Rock, Water are very common move types)

It doesn't really matter, IMHO. Typhosion's cool the way he is... and the way this game's built, Typhlosion doesn't have a Gym Leader to fear... well, aside from Chuck, maybe, but Typhlosion can always learn Thunderpunch anyway, so, yeah.
We love him just the way he is... versatile moveset and above average stats are good enough. Kind of like my Pikachu in the 6-mon challenge.

Typhlosion doesn't have a Gym Leader to fear... well, aside from Chuck, maybe, but Typhlosion Claire and her Kingdra are sad. And if you count the optional Kanto leader (yes, Kanto is optional lol) Then Brock, Misty and MAYBE Blue are sad as well. Typhlosion can be afraid of quite a wide number of Gym leaders.

Not if he has the "Thunder/Ice/Fire punch" moves. I can't remember if there are others, but if Typhlosion has them, then Claire, Misty and maybe Brock are pushovers.

At least, in GSC... I just checked out Serebii.net. Apparently, they nerfed him. Now, he can only have Thunderpunch through a Platinum Move Tutor. That sucks. It'll probably change once SSHG is released, but for now, *rants*. I can't believe they even removed Earthquake from his move list (memory's foggy... correction, please if I'm wrong). Meh... at least he can still have Solarbeam, Rock Slide and Aerial Ace.

Meh... at least he can still have Solarbeam, Rock Slide and Aerial Ace. First of all, Serebii already has movelists from HeartGold/SoulSilver, and Typhlosion still only learns Thunderpunch from Move Tutors. Second, Typhlosion still learns Earthquake through TM, if it needs to have it. However, third, Typhlosion actually lost quite a bit of power behind Thunderpunch in the generation shift. It still does good damage, sure, but just try not to expect it to be as powerful as it was in the originals.

Aw, I wanted to make my Typhlosion have elemental superiority. Ah well, I'll muster something up for him/her.
