In any games that have characters with different stats/ability, do you usually stick with the same main the whole time you play, or do you tend to change mains all the time? I'm a main changer myself, example, in Brawl: I started to main Pit, then Snake, Then, Toon link, after that, Lucario, after a few months, I started to main Ike and Marth, without a lot of sucess. The, about a week ago, GodKefka told me I should main Rob and G&W (G&W was my main along with DR mario in melee) since I'm a lot better with those. In mario Kart Wii, I was a big Rosalina/Large Bike L spammer, now, I'm more Funky Kong/ Shooting star mainer.
What about you?

For me, it varies. I either stick to one character or team of characters for one time until the need arrives to switch to another, I choose a character I think has potential or really like, or I just choose at random. Most of the time though, the first one is most likely my preferred choice of main. Take Mario Kart Wii for example, my main is Waluigi and Shooting Star, but as a backup, I got Diddy Kong and, I forget, but I think it's the Mach Bike for winning various Cups and doing various Time Trials.

Main characters, huh? Well I usually try to stick with a squad that I am either good at using or find them just awsome to play as. For Super Smash Brothers I always have been and possibly always will be, a Kirby player (I was given a horrid nickname for suicide killing). In Brawl I soon used King Dedede, for four reasons, waddle dee army, waddle dee toss, an overpowered hammer and his dash attack. I also have experience as Roy, Falco and Ganondorf, but more recently I've been using poke'mon trainer. So basically, my main doesn't exist, I use a squad of 4 instead.
For mario Kart I'm always choosing the koopa troopers (Double dash and DS), I love the triple homing shell special (and the higher chance of getting shells...). For the Double dash, I'd use Koopa paratrooper and someone either light or mid weight, usually Diddy, I never played the game enough to find a good kart though. For the DS I always grab dry bones and either the ROB-BLS or Zipper.
Basically my main is almost always the same, but of course different times call for different measures; since Dedede isn't going to much use on Final Destination.

First time Mains usually suck (save for some mains like Zidane, Vivi or fighting game characters like Gatomon or Bob who actually rock hard). So it's usually better to switch to the better ones once you get them. Take Terra for example. She MAY have magic from the beginning, but so does Celes and Celes has a much better skill than Terra in both the World of Balance AND the World of Ruin. Especially against the first 3 Kefka tiers, Ultima Weapon & Ultima Buster. Not to mention, Terra's stats are not even as high as Celes' because of the gap wherein Terra can't be used, thus no Esper buffs for nearly half of the game. Hmmm... let's see... Ohh yes! And there's also Model A. That sucked so bad. Seriously. I mean, sure MegaMan games are meant to be hard with just the base MegaMan with a Buster, but ZXA is harder to Buster Run with Model A than it is with Model a. What with the stature, slide and faster rapid fire. I mean, for the sacrifice of mobility and charged shots, I don't really mind. ... Digimon Rumble Arena? Yeah... At first glance, you'd think that Patamon (or Seraphimon) would rock. Turns out, he sucks. Then I switched to Guilmon and I start to own the game. Switch it to hard mode, and I started suck. That's when I discovered 3 overlooked characters (2 of which are Imba): BKWargreymon (pure ownage), Gatomon (spammage) & Impmon (totally an Imba'd killer). And even though they're some of the cheapest characters, they're unlike all the other cheap characters *coughsabincough*. Why? Because the make the game much more fun to play and don't suck any fun out of it, because the game (and Reapermon) in itself is hard. I'd go on, but I think it would take me a while to recall some of the other first time mains I dislike and why they're so bad... However, as I said, there ARE also awesome mains. Some of whom are: Zidane, Vivi, Steiner (all from FF9), Locke, Edgar (all from FF6), AntEater (DQM), Non-Tribe MegaMan (SF2), Joe (Viewtiful Joe... Red Hot Rumble, I believe), Guilmon, Monmon, Kumamon ( all from DMW3) and Kain (FF4) IN SUMMARY: First time Mains and Mains in general are meant to be changed (thus, defaults usually suck) time and time again. Sometimes for the better, sometimes just for a challenge in skill. It depends on the user and his or her skill. If he or she thinks that he or she is suited for that Main/character, then there's no need to change. It's actually all just about being comfortable and having fun.

Now lets see here:
Brawl: I firstly used Samus but soon switched to metaknight followed by Ike, now it's snake. Eldar scroll; Oblivion: I started out using an Argonian, however I did change around a bit and now I ALWAYS use a dark elf. Runescape: Yeah I mainly use melee on this, however to suit the occasion I change to mage and almost never range, unless I feel like training it.
*cough* Kirby Whore *cough*

My view on them depends on the game type
In a fighting game like brawl, keeping to the same character makes it easier for people to wise up to your stratagies, and to be quite literal, i main the random character button.
Kirbiciding/dededeciding/bowserciding = Retarded. it's the only thing about the game I loathe with a passion.
however, in an RPG such as Final fantasy, you know for a fact whos going to be better such as squall in FF8 who could NEVER miss a physical attack, even when under blind status or Myrmidons/swordmasters in fire emblem, who could kill pretty much anything in a single hit, regardless of the weapons triangle.

I change my mains quite quickly, as I often go against my morals and choose my worst character (Ice Climbers in Brawl). I attempted Boss Battles with IC's, and I completed it with my fastest time...
So, I think it's good to change characters now and again, to get experience with everything.

When I first unlocked Sonic in Brawl, I didn't get along with him. I've played him some time ago and loved it - just after a few months. So yea.
In Melee, though, I picked Peach, and still play Peach after 7 years. So yea - again.

Well... in Melee, I stuck with Captain Falcon, cuz he was the fastest runner and had his awesome knee attack.
Then he was nerfed in Brawl, so I changed to Pit, but I soon ditched him for G&W, due to range and recovery move. Lately, I've started to like using Wario.
On other games, I usually stay with my mains for most of the game. Like in Pokémon Pearl, I had my team of Empoleon, Kadabra, Staraptor, Luxray and Croagunk and Palkia for most of the game, with minor changes for HM purposes.
It also goes with equipment. In AoS, I got a Combat Knife from a Zombie Soldier at the start of the game, and stuck with it until I got the Whip Sword. That was like... 3 bosses or so.

Kirbiciding/dededeciding/bowserciding = Retarded. it's the only thing about the game I loathe with a passion. I learned how to do it myself... Used as a surprise in melee and haven't used Kirby's Main attack in ages. Then about a month ago Squid thought it would be funny to make me have to chase snake... That running strategy is more nooby than a suicide and wouldn't work in 4v4, only on 1v1 with no items... On Final Destination *shudder*. I had to end the stupid mess there and then. Oh and just yesterday I was playing as Ganon and getting wooped by a Pit player on Final Destination, so he tries to prevent my recover and finds himself and me crashing into the Ocean below... I then clobbered his sorry hide. Basically if you don't want suicides don't be a "tourney tard"!

In FFVI, I used Relm, Locke, and Umaro, then Terra Solo, then Sabin and Umaro, then Locke and someone else. To this day I still haven't found the perfect team.
In Ryuusei 3, I tend to use Libra alot, but then switch to Ophiucus and then Gemeni and back to Libra, sometimes switching to Crown, Cygnus, and Cancer.
In Maple Story, I can never finish training one character because I always make another, go back, and then abandon it, and repeat the cycle. The Pirate should keep me from doing that though.

Melee: Pichu, 'nuff said.
Brawl: When you play me against Pikachu, your in for hell. (ask omni...) I just got Sonic, and i've been getting along well with him. MetaKnight:WHOA! Only Sonic can beat him. Ike: DAMN.... you.... Lucario: I'm getting good with him, I get my inspiration by yelling kamehameha. Z-Suit Samus: heh, didn't think I would be that good.
S4 League: SWORDS SWORDS AND MORE SWORDS!
FFVI: uhh, Sabin, Edgar, Terra, aaand... sometimes Setzer.

SSB64: Luigi. Just... Luigi.
Melee: Hot damn was Falco good. I started off using Bowser and sucking, then when I unlocked G&W I used him, and was actually semi-good. Later on I started using Falco, and I was pretty good with him too. I haven't touched Melee in two years, though.
Brawl: I have lots. First I tried Falco again, and didn't like him. Luigi is a nice throwback to what Mario used to be. Game and Watch still owns. I like hit-and-run with Sonic, Snake's fun to try sometimes, and I'm getting to be good with Marth in Brawl. I tried using Wolf when I first got him, and I wasn't that good. Zero Suit Samus is another one I'm good with.
FFVI: Gameshark.
Wrecking Crew '98: The onigiri. (Rice cake)

Dah, mains...
Melee: Samus. Enough said.
Brawl: At first I tryed Samus but then abondoned her for Diddy Kong. After a while I got sick of using Diddy Kong and started using Ike which I still use today for fun,but switched to Sonic because I liked the look of himand switched to Captain Falcon, because I realised I was doing really bad with Sonic, who is todays main, but I still use Toon Link as well as Captain Falcon, sometimes even better...
Now I'm trying alot of players! Here's my list, Rated on how confident I am on them... Mario 8/10 Donkey Kong 4/10.. Seriously Falco 6/10 Ike 7/20 Toon Link 10/10 C.F 9/10... Stupid Side B suicides...
Mario Kart Wii/DS:
For DS I use Bowser in Dry Bones tanks car. A mix of heavy and nice acceleration For The Win!
On the Wii however I use Funky Kong on Wario's Bike. Try it! It rocks.
